Ocellated, Gould's and Rio Grande Turkey

Looking to get your Mexican Slam?

The National Wild Turkey Federation recognizes individuals for achieving the Mexican Slam who take a Rio Grande, Gould’s and Ocellated Turkey, all in Mexico. To receive recognition for accomplishing your slam, you must register each bird with the federation. Registration invokes a system of protocols designed to verify your harvest meets all legal and sporting standards such as harvested in season, valid hunting license and tag and conforms to the ethics of Fair Chase.

The most highly sought NWTF slam is the Grand Slam, which requires an Eastern, Osceola, Merriam’s and a Rio Grande. From there, many take a Gould’s to get their Royal Slam, then on to the Ocellated for their World Slam. This is normally accomplished over the course of several years. I always advise hunters when they are starting out, to take their Rio in Mexico. Taking a Rio in Mexico counts toward your Grand Slam, but taking one in the US does not count toward the Mexican Slam. Then, when you get your World Slam, the Mexican Slam is included.

Larry Newton Outdoors was the first company to offer the Mexican Slam Hunt where you take all three birds in one trip. Due to the various seasons and peak hunting times, it is possible to make only one hunt each year and space is limited to 4 hunters. This is an arduous hunt and you must be in good physical condition. Overall, hunting begins with the Ocellated hunt in the jungles of Campeche where the temps will likely be nearing 100 degrees and ends 12 days later in the mountains of Chihuahua above 6,000 ft where the morning temps will likely be below freezing.

In 2016, I took these three birds to become the 16th person to be recognized by the NWTF for accomplishing the Mexican Slam.
